Marimekko at Spazio Rossana Orlandi
Il 05/04/2014
Marimekko brings a design statement for power of expression and design that can empower people to let their creativity run free to Milan Design Week 8–13 April 2014. The statement takes the form of an installation at Spazio Rossana Orlandi featuring Marimekko’s symbolic design icon Unikko that turns 50 years this year. The sketch-like environment tells a story about how our living spaces can have a positive impact on our daily lives. It is also one of the Unikko Pattern Places to be launched in 2014 that will pop up and bring joy to people in different cities around the world, celebrating the birthday of the most famous Marimekko pattern of all time.
Unikko was born in 1964 shortly after the company’s founder Armi Ratia had announced that Marimekko would never print a floral pattern. Designer Maija Isola refused to obey Armi’s orders and designed an entire collection of floral patterns in protest, one of them being Unikko that has since become a symbol of Marimekko’s design philosophy. The range of Unikko colourways seen in the Milan installation represent the versatility and boldness that the pattern has had during each of the five past decades.
“Inspired by the 50th anniversary of Unikko, this year in Milan we wanted to take a strong stand against the self-seriousness often prevalent in the design world and to demonstrate how boldly designed living environments can empower people to trust their personal vision and walk their own path, just like Maija Isola, the designer of Unikko, did”, says Minna Kemell-Kutvonen, Marimekko’s Design Director, Prints.
In addition to the installation at Spazio Rossana Orlandi, the new Wallcovering Marimekko4 by Sirpi collection (distributed by Jannelli&Volpi in Italy) will be showcased at JVstore di Jannelli&Volpi in Milan.
The Milan Design Week is one of the world’s most significant furniture and interior design events gathering around 300,000 industry professionals and media representatives annually.
All the celebratory activities around Unikko’s 50th anniversary can be followed through a dedicated website www.marimekko.com/unikko.
