Is accounts receivable an asset or revenue?

Accounting and finance teams are responsible for receiving invoices and issuing payments before the due date to avoid penalties. However, the term receivables could include both trade receivables and nontrade receivables. Accounts receivables are amounting that customers owe the entity for normal credit purchases.

In other words, any money that a business has a right to collect as payment is listed as accounts receivable. For tax reporting purposes, a general provision for bad debts is not an allowable deduction from profit[5]—a business can only get relief for specific debtors that have gone bad. A company that keeps track of accounts payable will be able to determine where its money is going and how to be more cost-efficient.



Generally, collecting a balance too quickly can put undue stress on clients with good standing. The ending balance on the trial balance sheet for accounts receivable is usually a debit. If the receivable amount only converts to cash in more than one year, it is instead recorded as a long-term asset on the balance sheet (possibly as a note receivable). The net reported amount of the gross receivable and the allowance is the amount of receivables outstanding that management actually expects to collect. With the accrual accounting, you record a transaction whether cash has been received or not.



Unfortunately, not all of your customers will pay their debts promptly, meaning you’ll likely have to do some chasing to recover those outstanding funds. This process, known as “dunning,” typically involves sending reminders to these (or soon-to-be delinquent) accounts. To track how well your dunning efforts are going, you should regularly create accounts receivable aging reports. In other words, when you buy on credit, it affects your A/P, and when you sell on credit, it affects your A/R. On the other hand, if a company’s A/R balance declines, the invoices billed to customers that paid on credit were completed and the money was received in cash. More specifically, the days sales outstanding (DSO) metric is used in the majority of financial models to project A/R.

Receivables cannot be negative, but net working capital can, if liabilities are greater than assets and growing at a constant rate along with assets. In our illustrative example, we’ll assume we have a company with $250 million in revenue in Year 0. To properly forecast A/R, it’s recommended to follow historical patterns and how DSO has trended in the past couple of years, or to just take an average if there appear to be no significant shifts.
