Held five times as part of the Habitare fair at Messukeskus, the international EcoDesign special exhibition will be on display at La Triennale di Milano, in conjunction with the Milan Furniture Fair Salone del Mobile. A total of 50 designs considered to best address the annual environmental theme will be selected for the exhibition.
The EcoDesign exhibition has been held at Messukeskus every year since 2009. The collection of designs to be presented in Milan in April will include 10 to 15 works for each annual theme, with the curator for each year's exhibition involved in the selection."The idea is to highlight new design that prioritises environmental concerns", says the exhibition producer Jari Pirhonen from the advertising agency Valo.
In 2009, the EcoDesign exhibition theme was an environmentally friendly chair, with Yrjˆ Kukkapuro as the curator. The 2010 theme was an environmentally friendly light fitting, with Ingo Maurer, of Germany, as the curator, while the 2011 exhibition featured multifunctional furniture, with Konstantin Grcic, of Germany, as a guest of honour. In 2012 and 2013, the theme was wood as material. The 2012 curator was Kristiina Lassus, and the 2013 curator was Toshiyuki Kita of Japan.
"Our goal is to support the export of Finnish furniture and interior design, to increase the recognition of these industries, and to forge contacts with industry decision-makers, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, designers, educational institutions and the media. We also want to reinforce the image of Finland as a design nation that takes environmental concerns into account. We believe that this will, in the future, give us a strategic competitive advantage in the marketplace", Pirhonen adds.
The exhibition architecture of the EcoDesign exhibition to be staged in Milan will be by the Aalto University Department of Spatial and Furniture Design. The exhibition stand structures will be provided by exhibition partner UPM. Other exhibition partners include the Ministry of Education and Culture, Messukeskus, Motiva and WWF Finland. The exhibition will be organised and produced by the advertising agency Valo.
The EcoDesign exhibition to be presented at Habitare next September will concentrate on life-cycle thinking, environmental sustainability and recyclability. According to the brief, the designs can make use of wood but also other materials.
